Quite the opposite. These statements are from an otherwise anti-free trade book written by Philippe Deane Gigantes, a Liberal senator who is an historian and economist : with a doctorate from the Uni- } versity of Toronto. Whatever the weaknesses of the FTA, they are not, according to this Liberal, in the areas of medicare, social programs or culture. Understanding the FTA is hard enough without resorting to fear instead of facts. Could we please appeal to our political leaders to raise the level of the debate rather than insulting the in- telligence of Canadians. by at- tempting to intimidate them into voting against the FTA? George Pajari West Vancouver ‘Mot in Canada’s interest’ Dear Editor: Canadians must bear in mind that the United States never does anything unless it is in the best in- terests of the United States. The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is not and never will be in the best interests of Canada. If it were, the United States would have nothing to do with it. What is the point of strengthening Canada? If the FTA is approved, Canada is going to become a convenient extension of the United States, a huge cupboard up north, where vast supplies of Canadian resources aré for the taking. Canadians must also realize that when there is a critical shortage of our energy in the future, our de- scendants may have to shiver in the depths of a cold winter, whilst to the south, the Americans continue to keep themselves warm from the very energy we are forced to export to them, supplemented by their own production of their carefully conserved resources. Our descendants will surely curse us for selling their inher- itance for a pittance. Magie L. Dominic North Vancouver Give cash te vets, not dictators Dear Editor: Prime Minister Brian Mulroney left a trail of money on his last trip to Africa. The total was $128 mil- lion. it is in the form of loans (never repaid) or aid to various projects in seven countries. These countries are totalitarian, one-party police states, rife with corruption and tribal savagery. ANTIQUE PINE AND OAK ovr 200 Pieces Our veterans suffered and died to defeat regimes exactly like that. Why don’t we give the millions, now wasted to prop-up these dic- tators, to our veterans so they don’t have to sell poppies to raise money? H.
