Man guilty of carrying knife A 21-YEAR-OLD Squamish man received a suspended sentence and was placed on probation for nine months after he pleaded guilty Nov. 9 in North Vancouver provincial court to carrying 2 concealed weapon (a knife) into the maternity ward of Lions Gate Hospital. Christopher Robert Aitken was originally charged with possess- ing a weapon dangerous to the public and carrying a concealed weapon in connection with Oct. 12 incidents in which Aitken became upset and threatened a doctor when he was not called into the hospital’s delivery room to witness the Caesarean birth of his daughter. Appearing before Judge J.B. Paradis, Aitken pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon. A stay of proceedings was entered in the other charge against Aitken. In addition to the probation term, Aitken was ordered to per- form 50 hours of community work service. Mian fined for dangerous driving| | A WEST Vancouver man was fined $1,500 in West Vancouver provincial court Nov. 15 after he was convicted of dangerous driv- ing causing bodily harm. The fine sgainst Paul J. Sykes, 70, stems from a Feb. 19 high- speed motor vehicle accident involving two cars. The cars collided head-on in the 2600-block of the Upper Levels Highway just before 10:30 p.m. when the vehicle driven by Sykes, travelling west in an cast-bound lane, hit a car driven by 27-year-old Denise Reseigh. Reseigh, her passenger Vicki Logan, 26, and Sykes were all in- jured as a result of the collision. | NV highways icontract awarded THE PROVINCIAL government has awarded a three-year road and bridge maintenance contract for the North Vancouver area to Capilano Highway Services Company, a new venture associated with Edco Construction. This was the 17th privatization contract awarded for road and bridge maintenance to a private B.C. company. Sixty-five provincial highways employees in the contract area have elected to join the new company.. Existing highways employees have been offered jobs by the new company 3t their current salary, position and union status. District Highways offices will continue to handle subdivision approvais, municipal liaisons, local highway planning end con- struction supervision, technical services, contract management and administration. Seatbelt blitz gets results THE NORTH Vancouver RCMP seatbelt blitz launched mid- October bas resulted in 713 tickets being issued up to Nov, 14, The blitz, which has the police detachment setting up random road checks in all areas of North Vancouver City and District, will run to the ead of the month, The seathelt violation tickets are being cancelled if ticket recipients attend a showing of Room To Live, a seatbelt safety film sponsored by ICBC. So far, 308 drivers have attended and have had their tickets cancelled. A total of 444 people have viewed the movie during the blitz. Police have arranged for two showings on the first Ovo Mondays of December to give drivers ticketed near the end of the month an opportunity to attend the movie and cancel their tickets.
