NORTH VANCOUVER
District’s Alpine Communi-
ty Plan has won the Cana-
dian Institute of Planners
annua! award of excellence.

The plan captured first prize last
month for planning excellence
from among 17 Canada-wide en-
tries, and that doesn’t surprise the
district director of development.

“I'm not at all surprised,’’ said
Richard Plunkett. ‘‘We have three
or four plans we're considering
entering including our official
community plan which is extremely
innovative. We're definitely going
to submit that one next year.’’

Plunkett said he feels especially
good about winning because North
Vancouver District competed with
bigger Canadian cities and won.
‘Tt makes you feel good when you
consider what a staff in a small
community like ours can do com-
pared to major cities like Toronto
and Vancouver."'

tain the forested area,’? Plunkett
said of the Alpine, a major water-
shed area consisting of

wilderness in the northern portion
of the district.

and hatchery programs, and it en-
dorses the establishment of a
number of parks and recreational
facilities in the area.

“What we're saying is it's a sen-
sitive area,’’ said Plunkett. ‘‘We
don’t want to encourage any
public intrusion except for recre-
ational purposes.**

A certificate from the Canadian
Institute of Planners honoring the
plan will be presented to district
council members at a future
meeting.
