The one thing that most com- panies don’t think about, however, are those things, that will keep the system running. once it’s installed — computer supplies and ac- cessories, — Most of us would assume that these accessories — the paper, diskettes, ribbons and even fur- niture — are “‘small potatoes’’ that can’t amount to much of an ex- pense. But consider this: a study of automated Canadian businesses, commissioned by Moore Business Products, Division, found that of companies interviewed, an average of $34,000 annually was spent on computer supplies and accessories. Even: the. small - businesses surveyed spend. an average $19,000 a year on automation: supplies and furniture. - Just.as. important as the overall cost of computer supplies is s buying . the right supplies. This is essential to make your computer or word processor work effectively. Many companies order incompatible products, use furniture not design- ed for use with a computer or try to make old, manual forms work with a new computerized system. “Do make someone responsihie. Nothing is more frustrating than running out of paper, ordering the wrong printer ribbons or disl-ettes. Give one individual the respon- sibility for maintaining inventory, and keeping records of which sup- plies work with which products.- Don't think only the old way. Automating your office should mean changing the way you do things if your new equipment gives you an easier, faster way to meet your objectives of maintaining files, processing customer orders or handling your accounts payable. Extend this thinking to the sup- plies you order. Take advantage of invoices, statements and cheques designed to, work with common microcomputer software ‘packages such as Peachtree, Radioshack or others. Do protect your investment. There are many products created to protect your office automation investment. From cleaning kits to dust covers for the spare printer or terminal and from diskette or printwheel storage binders to fireproof safes, there are supplies on the market to keep your equipment — and its valuable data — safe. You can even restrict access to your computer system to the peo- ple who should have it with lock- ing keyboard drawers (when you’re away, no one else will be able to play.). Don't forget about people. You decided to automate your office to make your people more produc- tive, so make sure that you make the new office environment one that encourages that productivity.
