JT IS a common misconception
among amateur gardeners that
Dutch bulbs must be lifted after
flowering and replanted the fol-
lowing fall.

Discouraged by this extra work,
they then forego the pleasures of
growing bulbs and unfortunately,
that of having a full season of
bloom in the garden.

How unfortunate that this idea
is so widespread, especially since a
single planting of the right bulbs
can bring many years of bloom.

Of course, it is true that certain
bulbs ~— most notably hybrid
tulips and hyacinths — degenerate
if left in the ground and will do
better if dug up and replanted
every few years. This is because the
bulbs multiply and compete for
food and space.

On the other hand, there are
many small bulbs that actually do
better if left in the ground for
many years.

As these bulbs multiply, a pro-
cess called perennialization, the
number of flowers increases, often
dramatically.

These bulbs may be left in the
ground for five years to 10 years
— even a lifetime — with no
slowdown in the display.

from weeds and other flowering
plants, need no spraying for insects
and you won't even need to rake

to promote more vigorous flower-

Bulbs can be naturalized in
lawns and woodlands, added to
tock gardens as part of the con-
tinuously changing display,
planted as flowering borders or
grown among shrubs or perennials
to add color early in the season.
