SHIP-SHAPE SUMMER

Dry-clean your
sleeping bags

IT’S TIME to start mapping out
summer hikes, while making sure
all your gear is in top condition.
This includes your sleeping bag.

Most sleeping bags can he dry-
cleaned satisfactorily if the proper
precautions are followed.

The exception is a sleeping bag
with a waterproof coating of
plastic or rubber, which can usual-
ly be wet-cleaned.

The shell or outer fabric is either
cotton, nylon, cotton and nylon,
or cotton and polyester.

Most bags are filled with fibres

of either acrylic, polyester or.

nylon.
During dry-cleaning some bags

will lose water repellency, making
it necessary to retreat them,

This is done by spraying on a
commercial dry-type repellent that
is mixed with solvent.

Furthermore, bags must be
thoroughly deodorized before their
use.

This explains why dry-cleaners
do not offer overnight cleaning of
sleeping bags.

Hf sleeping bags are washed at
home, special care must be taken.

In fact, too much mechanical
action can cause the synthetic
fibres to lump together. Therefore,
short washing procedures and high
water levels are recommended.
