revolution’s over, that,

there’s no problem be-
tween men and women.
Well, that’s just not
true.”’

Ginny Nicarthy, {author
and counsellor with the
Women’s Counselling Group
in Seattle will be in, North
Vancouver Thursday to ad-
dress the global issue of wife
assault at a public forum be-
ing sponsored by the North
Shore Information and Vol-
unteer Centre and the Justice
Institute of B.C. She's hop-
ing for a big crowd — she’s
convinced that massive
media campaigns, as well as
public information forums
are the only way to educate
the public on wife assault.

“We in the field tend to
think that everyone knows
about it. But there’s a big
lack in public education,”
says Nicarthy. ‘“There has to
be a continual campaign to
keep the public up on what's
being done in this area, and
to let people know where
they can go for help.”*

Nicarthy says she has been
involved in the ‘‘war, peace
and violence movements for
years,’ becoming involved
in the anti-rape movement in
1972, as one of the founder:
of Rape Relief in Seattle.

But it was in 1976, as
awareness of wife battering
grew, that she decided to
‘start a.group for battered
women in Seattle.

Nicarthy says the average
profiles of wife batterers are
‘‘very. rvisleading. Men who
batter have been over-
socialized. They believe that
they are the ones with power
in. society, and they think
that they have the right and
the obligation to control
women or those less power-
ful than they are.”

Adds Nicarthy: “1 think a
lot of it has to do with the
fact that human beings, ‘by
and large, don’t know’ how
to deal with power very well.
It takes some strength of
character to use powcr
responsibly.”
