However, during these
years they are also dis-

covering themselves and what
they want, and this can result
in conflict between you and
your child.

Positive Parenting can help
you deal with your child's
growing need for in-

dependence. The content of
this eight-week course in-
cludes family communication
skills, using parental power
in a positive way, helping
children develop values and
discipline methods which
respect parent and child.

The teen, or young adult-

these years ahead, North
Shore Family Services and
Continuing Education are
sponsoring Parents of Pre-
Teens, (11-13 years). This
eight-week course will deal
with the transition period
{usually beginning some-
where from age !1, and
marked by behavior changes)
between childhood and the

Kiwanis celebrates

WEST VANCOUVER
Kiwanis members will
celebrate Kiwanis Interna-
tional’s 70th birthday during
Kiwanis Anniversary Week,
January 20-26, announced
Colin Piggott, president of
the Kiwanis - Club of West
Vancouver.

The first Kiwanis Club'was
chartered. on- January’ 21,
1915, in Detroit, ‘Michigan.
Today the organization has
grown to include 8,100 clubs
and "310,000 members in 80
nations...and:- geographic
areas, Clubs are composed of
business’ .and . professional
men involved. in. voluntary
community service under the
motto ‘‘We Build’. °.

Last’ year, Kiwanis clubs
raised and spent $41.4

-tillion for community ser-
vice projects, with special
emphasis on the needs of
underprivileged children. In-
dividually, members also
contributed more than -21
million man-hours to service
work,

Kiwanis Club of West Van-
couver aids the Senior

Citizens Apartments and: & -
Lodge, the Gift of Sight

(International Project), Han-
dicapped Citizens, School
Scholarships, Committee for
Abused Women, Dyslexia
Students, and many other
community projects.

The flourishing and active
local Kiwanis Club is most in-
terested in further expanding
its membership in West
Vancouver,
