mailbox | 2 mailbox [><] Prof. Pi Dear Editor: I refer you to a column by Doug Collins, racist, printed last Sunday, September 9, and headed: ‘‘Heaven help Professor Pinkus’s students.”’ His remarks, of ‘course, would be insulting, coming from a serious source. But his column proves clearly to me that it comes from a racist who takes the trouble to include my full home address. (Why mine of all letter writers on the page? Will his friends come and burn a cross on the lawn?) It is to this racist approach that | take exception, as any decent citizen must. He says he provided his readers the gist of a book banned, he says by Customs because of ‘‘my friends in B’nai Brith’’ (I have none), and no one was going to tell him ‘‘what not to read.”’ This book, long ago, was shown to be a malicious lie. Yet Collins suddenly ex- humes it, repeats the old lies as if they are worth recon- sidering, knowing that it feeds the very hatred that led to the Holocaust. He repeats the libels against a specific group of people, and against a group of people who are dead. This to any fair-minded person is so offensive that one has to question his motives for selecting this par- ticular book to prove the need for unbridled. Is he so simple as to think people can believe this? free speech ee Ks e Ks } <> ~ circular saw. Name Address How to win. He does not because he is a racist posing as a crusader for freedom of speech. Why does he say that some Jews demand that ‘‘anyone who challenges an orthodox view of history should be persecuted,’’ when what hap- pened was that under the laws of Canada, Butz’s book, an internationally recognized example of race hatred, was refused entry? Why does he choose Rasinier as the main support of his claim, a Frenchman found guilty in France for disseminating the same racist untruths as Butz, and reject every other authority and piece of evidence, even the official West German view? Even Milton, the first great champion of freedom of speech in England, excluded from that freedom the greatest common danger. The United States still takes that position, and civilized democracies, including Canada, in one way or another have laws against libel on individuals, hate pro- paganda, and immoral and indecent expression. 1, If Mr. Collins objects to that, he is free to try to change the laws. I note that they did not interfere with his reading the book which was Everyone must pay for bed in Dear Editor: John Reynolds didn’t know what he was talking about in his contribution to September 7th’s ‘‘Cross- Fire’’. It is true that no one will be turned away from a hospital in B.C., but it is not true that ‘‘hospital user fees are varied according to the ability of a person to pay.”’ Evryone, including those on welfare, are charged the same $8.50 a day for an acute care bed.
