The following tips, provid-

District fire prevention of-
fice, can help you reduce that
potential and truly have a
happy holiday.

First, check wiring and
connections of outdoor light
strings. While most sets are
heavy-duty and designed to
withstand the rigors of the
outdoors, age can take its
toll.

The same applies to lights
used indoors whether on the
tree or to trim windows. Bare
or frayed wires or cracks in
the plastic that cover wires
are potential danger areas.

The tree itself should be
bought fresh. Before setting
it up, cut off at least one inch
of the trunk on a diagonal.
Place the tree securely in a
container that holds water.
Keep the reservoir filled with
water throughout the season.

Don’t set the tree up in
front of exit doorways or
near such heat sources as
radiators, televisions, spot-
lights and so on.
