"AT - Wednesday, May 26, 1982 - North Shore News RAR rn cx iD boo x ERR HEU slogan ‘preposterous’ Dear Editor: Re: “Don't Get Sick in B.C.” It is both inconceivable and incomprehensible in these times of high un- employment in B.C.'s resource industnes that any- one with an ounce of sense would propose to close down the tourism industry as well. The very thought of one union forcing thousands of members of other unions into the unemployment and welfare lines, not to mention thousands more who 4re not unionized is, in itself, pre- posterous — to say the least. The statement by = an officer of the Health Em- ployees Union that the union executives are considering a “Don't Get Sick In B.C.” anti-tourism campaign exceeds even that level of incredibility reached by the municipal workers last summer with respect to their Own anti-tourist “garbage.” Hospital union and ad- ministrative representatives have been citing incidents of hospital employee lay-offs, beds being closed, am- bulances being turned away, etc. This is the same kind of questionable scare _ tactic used by some school trustees and teachers who object to the long overdue accounta- bility requirements imposed on them by the Ministry of Education. In the case of the hospitals, there have been no serious suggestions made by the well-paid administra- tors (LGH - $70,000/yr) as to ways in which the day to day operating costs might be reduced to stay within budget. There does not even appear to be evidence of serious attempts being made by hospital unions. or management to maintain services in the face of spend- ing restraints. The best they have offered their members, employees and patients (and now, potential tourists) are lay-offs, closed beds and threats of inadequate ser- vice. Why is it that nowhere does one hear or see any reference to even the pros- pect of increasing the pro- ductivity of those hospital and school employees af- fected by the restraint program. Increased pro ductivity geared towards improved efficiency, with a resulting reduction in costs, appears to be a_ logical solution to the problem that has been overlooked, for reasons best known to those responsible. Who can blame the government for getting tired of paying out your tax dollars and mine to cover the annual budget over-runs of school boards and hospitals? Taxi firm lauded Dear Editor: After the accident, I could no longer walk, let alone drive, and had to rely on our local cab company — North Shore Taxi — for daily transportation to the Lions Gate Hospital from my Deep Cove home. For the past seven months the cabs have consistently arrived on time. The drivers were helpful, courteous and always enjoyable to talk with. In all this time, there were only three occasions when | had to wait (between half and one hour) to get a cab. These were snowy Friday afternoons when getting a taxi anywhere in Vancouver would have been difficult. So many people must hail a cab once or twice a year, usually during the most difficult weather and traffic conditions; then are quick to judge and condemn _ the service. I, a_ travel-worn veteran of North Shore Taxi, know what an_e excellent service they do provide. For anyone who wants quick, safe and dependable transportation from A to B, always with a personable driver, I recommend North Shore Taxi. And if you prefer to travel in style, they provide a limousine service at no extra charge. Recently, I began driving myself to the hospital (I'm getting better!). But I muss talking to the North Shore taxi drivers.
