RESTORING a car totally
from scratch is not an easy
task, yet that is just what
John Church of North
Vancouver is doing.

Two years ago he found a
rare 1956 Pontiac Safari
station wagon and since has
systematically proceeded to
take the car and engine apart
right down to the last nut and
bolt. Cleaning or replacing
everything as he went, it
turned out to be a big job,
but a good project in his
spare time.

These wagons were only
made in the United States
and had a number of unusual
features, the most obvious
one is that they have only
two doors.

Designed as a luxury car,
the wagon has power
windows, power scats,
power steering and brakes,
and leather upholstery. It
also fcatures (believe it or
not) illuminated hood or
haments and a nifty light
mounted on the firewall
which has a recoiling wire so
