BS - Sumday News, February 21, 1982 side-lines by Andy Fraser A blatant plug Chariots of Fire. A movie about a couple of British runners in the 1924 Paris Olym- pics. It’s a true story. See it. See this movie if you want to discover that sport is something more than a pastime for the dull spec- tator who needs his super- ficial thrills served up to him courtesy of someone else's sweat. See it if you want to dis- cover just a touch of the compulsion that can make man the wonder that he is; to discover that none of us need be satisfied with the se- cond rate or second best. See it if you want to dis- cover that once upon a time there were people, young people, who committed their lives, if even for a short spell, to some great purpose, and were willing to sacrifice and struggle to attain a goal. See it if you want to discover that the truly im- portant win is not defeating the opponent, but in defeating oneself. That the true winner is the one who can reach deep. within himself and go beyond that too human part of us that says ‘this is too hard’, or ‘it’s just not worth it.’ And see it if you want to see a beautifully filmed and lyrical movie that you are Morfitt reached the finals PLAYING for the first ume in the Senior Veterans division (age 45 and over), George Morfitt of West Vasicouver powered his way to the finals of both the 1982 Canadian Hard Ball Squash Championships in Toronto and the 1982 United States Squash Championships in Washington, DC. Chariots of Fire is a story of Harold Abrahams, a Jewish law student at Cam- bridge University who felt he had to run everyone into the ground because of his Jewishness, and of Eric Lid- dell, a strongly principled rugby player who felt that the Lord gave him his speed and it was his duty to use his gift for the glory of God. It is a story from an age when the Olympic Games could be accepted as a benefit for the athletes and not a political event used by both countries and the media. It is a story about a time when running for your country and your school was a noble and good thing and not something to be laughed at. But mostly it is the story of the two men and the way each faced the major crisis that hit them at the Games: When Abrahams was blown away in the 200 metres and had to face the same com- petition in the 100 wonder- ing if he could ever beat the Americans, and more impor- tantly, himself; and of Eric Liddell, the ‘Flying Scot’ who found out that the heats for 100 metres were to be run on a Sunday, a day when a OUTBOARDS al 1OHPM $920 451M $670 7, SHRM $a75 9 BHP M $u/5 ¥Bree!et $1240 1H M $1240 250° M $1380 at babe MAL $2400 40 MEL $1650 TO rm EL $e sd VIS IP RL T $3050 All motore preserviced in. cluding 25 | tank, hose and propelies RIVERSIDE MARINE 1341 Main St North Vancouver 986-2822 ¥f he, as a Christian, would not compete.
