Al6-Wednesday, August 13, 1980 - North Shore News h ro com lex closed by cook’s strike MONTREAL (UPC) - A strike by kitchen staff forced evacuation Monday of ail 12,500 workers at the sprawling James Bay hydroelectric complex and threatened to delay some construction projects until the spring. James Bay Energy Corp. spokesman Dominique Gauthier said the 1,000 striking cooks and main- tenance workers would be flown out of the area, about 1,400 kilometers northwest of Montreal. Their departure will be followed by that of engineers, builders and other personnel over the next three days, she said. “We told them that they had until 2:00 p.m. Monday to get back to work-if not we would be obliged to evacuate the work sites.” Gauthier said. The workers were being airlifted to four points in Quebec, including Montreal and Quebec City, at a cost of $1.5 million to the cor- poration. Some 650 members of the union of Heavy Equipment Operators walked off the job Sunday at two major Sites, LG-3 and Camapiscau, after widespread work slowdowns at 15 sites scattered over the 134,000 square-mile James Bay municipality. “It was a kind of wildcat, if you like, because the strike was not called for by the union,” Gauthier said. “With all the problems we've been experiencing, we just didn’t have any choice. “We can't afford to leave the workers’ without adequate food and hygiene services. Our staff served them breakfast this morning without too much problem but dinner is impossible.” The corporation said if the strike goes on for more than a few weeks many of the projects underway would be delayed until after the winter. “If we can get the workers back as soon as possible there shouldn't be too much problem,” Gauthier _ said. “Otherwise when the snow sets in and the ground freezes, no dykes or dams can be built.” Meanwhile, talks between the union and two catering firms, J.A. Hubert Ltd. and Crawley McCracken Ltd., failed to solve renegotiation of the last year of the workers’ three-year-contract, which expires July, 1981. A directive issued by the party Central Committee, possibly over the quotations and poems of Chairman Mao in public’places said, “There have been too many por- traits, quotations and poems of Chairman Mao in public places. “This is lacking in political dignity. The number should be gradually reduced to an appropriate amount,” the directive. ordered. The Central Committee also banned the construction of any more monuments to glorify national leaders like the ones erected for Mao. The directive criticized the rash of biographies and collected writings of Chinese leaders, the most prolific of whom was Mao himself. These decisions all were indirect swipes at Hua, 59, Mao's handpicked suc- cessor. Hua edited the latest edition of Mao's writings and is believed to be the person who pushed for the con- struction of the monolithic Mao mausoleum on Peking’s sprawling Tien An Men Square. It was also Hua who turned Mao's birthplace in Hunan province into a national shrine. This too was attacked. : “There are no com- memorative decorations of the birthplaces of current Central Committee leading members, schools where they once studied and places they visited,” the directive said. It added that “decorations already put up should be removed.” “From now on, except by specific decision of the Central Committee, no.halls, pavilions or monuments are to be put up in memory of individual veteran revolutionaries,” it said. Gourmet termites invade civic centre IOWA CITY, Iowa (UPI) - - A nest of gourmet termites have invaded the city’s civic center, passing up loads of wood in the basement to devour 20,000 sheets of high quality paper. The estimated loss was $135. Cathy Eisenhofer, a purchasing agent for the city’s Finance Department, theorized that the termites found the paper a delicacy. “That paper is like candy to termites,” she said. “They don’t want wood when they can get good quality paper.” City officials have signed a $4,800 contract with a Coralville exterminator to get rid of the insects.
