new teaching aids Students in many schools this year will be spending more time in front of TV screens! But, they won't be watching situation comedies, game shows or cartoons. Instead, they will be learning to use — and Often learning from — a computer. : Since the 1960s, puters have been used on an ever-increasing basis for instruction in schools. A growing body of data attests to the effectiveness of these systems in increasing student achievement and in motivating students. In late 1977 as a result of the introduction of low- priced microcomputer systems, such as the TRS-80 manufactured by Radio Shack, the use of computers in the classroom began to increase greatly. Computer Assisted In- ' struction (CAI) uses the computer as a medium of instruction to assist in teaching subjects such as reading, mathematics, language arts, physics ad chemistry. The techniques that have proven effective have centered on individualized learning sessions where the computer generates and presents exercises for the student to solve. The computer then nee cane te com-— measures the student's performance and adjusts the difficulty of the problem. As a student’s performance. indicates an increased level of understanding of a concept, the computer generates more difficult problems to solve. Or, if the student's scores indicate a problem in a particular area, the com- puter adjusts the difficulty level to provide easier. problems in that area fo additional drills. In a matter of only a few years, people who know nothing about computers may well be among the educationally disadvantaged portions of the population. One answer to _ this growing need for “computer literacy” is a new Computer Education Series being developed by Radio Shack for use in the class-roo with their TRS-80 micro- computer at the secondary and college level. This complete teaching program includes a teacher's manual, student workbooks, and a set of transparencies for an overhead projector. Developed and _ field- tested in public schools over a two-year’ period, this material is designed for use by all teachers regardless of their knowledge of micro- computers and programming skills. COMPUTERS ARE GOING TO SCHOOL this year as more and more educators become aware of thelr vatuc and importance. Incxpensive microcomputers such as these Radio Shack TRS-80's provide a means for stadents to lcarn about using computers and also serve as “teaching machines” for a variety of subjects. cutorstyle 1730 Marine Dr West Vancouver Hair’s the Way To Look Great!
