Funds approved for low-income housing § THE North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped (NSAMB) has received provisional approval through the provincial HOMES BC program for a $5.4 million low-income housing devel- opment. Once the society has met the conditions of its proposal, it will build 40 units of affordable rental housing for families, seniors and people with disabilities at 150 Wese 2nd St. in North Vancouver. Seventy- four jobs will be created during the development's construction. “There is a need for affordable housing on the North Shore, and this pro- ject shows how govern- ments and community- based, non-profit organiza- tions can work in partner- ship to create local solutions for local problems,” said Jan Pullinger, who is the minister responsible for housing. “The provincial government, through HOMES BC and ‘the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped are coming together to provide adequate hous- ing at a price low-income people in North Vancouver can afford.” Pullinger, who is also the minister of social development and economic security, made the announcement May 12. Over 1,000 households in North Vancouver spend more than 50% of their income on rent, and the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $650 per month. “The North Shore has a higher population of seniors than most other regions, and some of the province’s highest housing prices,” said NSAMH president Sally Saunders. “As well, our community has more than 100 residents with disabilities who require affordable hous- “The North Shore has a higher population of seniors than most other regions, and some of the province’s highest housing rices.” the Wort share Asseclton fer Se Mentalty Handicaaped ing.
