Though the Dog’s grand ornate wooden Paris bistro bar, circa 1895 to 1900, has long since departed, the room, with its 20-foort high ceilings, stone floors, stylish European furniture and display cabinets, retains its Parisian cafe person- ality, to which Hanna and the Gallos have added more Italian and southern Hemisphere sensibilities. And while Loco’s diversity of collectibles is less rich than the Remarkable Dog's, its food is better. The panini sandwiches, for example, are some of the best served this side of the inlet. Loco started with four vari- eties when it opened back in late July 1999; it’s now up to 14. All are from Gallo’s fertile gastronomic repertoire, which is heavily influenced by the cuisines of Italy and his native Chile. Seafood, fresh vegetables and grilled cookery are front and centre. Combinations range from ‘filet of salmon, edam cheese and tartar sauce to sun-dried tomatoes, bocconcini, capicol- ry: folding) 1/2 loads li, peppers and artichoke hearts. And that’s just the inside. On the outside: Gallo’s home-baked focaccia, cut in thick squares, filled with the aforementioned ingredients, then cooked between special panini grills. The result is a sandwich with a crisp golden-brown waffle-textured exterior and a wonderfully fresh and soft interior. A sampled Coco Loco fea- tured grilled chicken breast topped with mozzarella cheese and sundried tomatoes fin- ished in a mild pesto sauce. The accompanying cala- masi salad was a light combi- nation of squid rings pickled with lemon and grilled red ppers. Both dishes were excellent. Elsewhere on Loco’s antipasto menu (which starts at .85 cents per item) you'll find such items as crostini, pasta salads, marinated mush- rooms, grilled vegetables and smoked salmon. For dessert, the cafe offers hiscotti, cheesecakes, hazelnut toffee bars and other enticing sweets. Cappuccinos, lattes, steanied , juices and teas — herbal and other — provide Loco liquid refreshment. The cafe’ ’s coffee service, which fea- ture’s Seattle’s Best products, kicks off at 7 a.m. Service is over-the-counter deli-style.
