IT’S amazing what sleeping on a problem
will do for its reso!ution.

For SFU graduand Mateja Sajna, it meant
the compiction of a FhD in mathematics that
was five years in the making. “I remember
going to bed last February with a notepad and
a hunch,” said Sajna. Before she’d even fallen
asleep the hunch had evolved into an idea.

By the end of a week, a problem that was
the basis of her PhD thesis and that she’d been
working on for a year was solved and, nvo
months later, so was the rest of a 30-year-old
puzzle in discrete mathematics. Discrete refers
to a branch of math that deals with organizing

and arranging a finite number of objects.

Sajna’s doctoral thesis determines exactly
when and how a set of objects can be sched-
uled into circular arrangements of a fixed size
in such a way that every pair of objects is sched-
uled to appear exactly once side-by-side in a
circle.

Sajna’s PhD thesis is an important recipe for
resolving everyday scheduling problems, like
making sure all of the attendees at a conference
or players in a round robin sports event are
paired off with cach other at least once.

Originally from Slovenia, the Burnaby resi-
dent now teaches calculus ac Capilano College.
