It used to get me down, T hated being in trouble; vet $was, constantly. But T remember one day when my Granny was over and ! was in rouble tor some: had spent a fair bic of time in the woodshed gerting, a good ing herself when she was a young girl. ] always tigured that as good a person as she grew up to be, maybe there was hope for me too. As she got older, my Granny's evesight started to tail, and the handiwork she abways did showed the signs of it. Sill, she carried her wi knicting basket with her every: where, and although the colour combinations of some of her quilts got pretty inter- esting, she never gave it up. She died when she was 82, just after the birth of my daughter. She had been at my house for dinner the night she had her stroke, and in the rush to get her to the hospital, we forgot her knitting basket. When she died F just put the old basket away and forgot about it. But a couple of weeks ago I decided to pull out that old basket. I knew that it was still full of squares she had knitted, and there were enough to be sewn together into a quilt. I decided that would be a good job for me. It was a way to teel close to her, | thought. When I pulled out her old basket, maybe out of habit, maybe because something else drew me there, I reached into the side pocket. Sure enough, there were nwo toffee candies. Bur just underneath the can- dies was the purple amethyst ring. I took it our and put it on my finger. It was hu; could probably have fit it on my big toe — but it was every bit as beautiful as | remem bered she was. Pve already started sewing, my Granny’s squares together. It’s my job, | feel ic right down to my boots. And, I've taken ihe ring in to be sized. I just know that f was meant to find it, and I'm going to put it to good use. When I’m fac- ing something difficult, or I teel the urge to be a lictle naughty, Pm going to wear that ring. I’m betting it will give me the strength to be a better person.
