Broadway smash Opens ,

Musicai based
on Puccini’s
La Bohéme

THE Broadway hit
musical Rent has taken
up residence at Vogue
Theatre, where it opens
Tuesday for a limited
run, bringing with it a
gritty cast of characters
inspired by Puccini’s La
Boheme.

The theme of ‘ove striving
to endure beyond all obstacles
remains. Yet opera-goers would
hardly recogni..e Puceini’s 19th
century masterpiece in this
landmark rock opera, whose
author, Jonathan Larson, died
weeks before its opening off-
Broadway in February 1996.

Larson’s “bohemians” are
the denizens of AIDS-cra East
Village, New York. The poet
Rudolfo becomes punk rocker
. Roger. The painter Marcello is
now video artist. Mark.
Puccini’s frail, rubercular Mimi,
a seamstress, is reincarnated as
Mimi Marquez, a dancer in an
S8&M.club and an HIV-positive

Saskia Garel, one-half of the
girl group Love & Sas and a
former member of the Rapror’s
Dance Team. At the advice of
the show’s casting agent, Garel
