“As part of our environ-
mental efforts for the future,
we have been striving to
come out with new vehicles
that will allow the recycling
rate of 96 percent after the
year 2000,” said Nissan
Chairman Yoshifumi Tsuji at
arecent dinner held to honor
environmental efforts by
Nissan and other corpora-
tions, individuals and govern-
ment agencies. Current levels
are about 75% te 80%.

At the dinner, Nissan was
the only automaker presented
with the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency’s “Best of
the Best Stratospheric Qzone
Protection Award.”

established an in- -house CEC
Committee at its headquar-
ters and in each of its major
overseas operating units, all
of which were assigned to
eliminate the use of chloro-
fluorocarbors in Nissan’s
vehicles and manufacturing
processes.

CFCs have been identi-
fied as possible causes of
atmespheric ozone layer
depletion. Due to the work
of the committee, Nissan
became the first atstomaker
in the world to commit itself
to phasing out al} CFCs in
vehicle air-conditioning sys-
tems.

In Canada, Nissan led the
auto industry by making
CFC recycling compulsory at
ail dealerships in 1990.

Nissan began selling vehi-
cles in North America with
CFC-free air-conditioning
systems in 1992.

The company also devel-
oped retrofit kits for each of
the vehicles it sold in Canada
and the United States so that
vehicles with CFC air-condi-
tioning systems could be con-
verted for use with a non-
CFC refrigerant.

In its manufacturing oper-
ations, Nissan completely
phased out the use of CFCs
and 1-]-1] trichoroechane as
