High - land costs and an ever-increas- ing array of charges imposed by all ‘levels of government have combined to impact neg- -.atively on housing affordabili- ty,” said GVHBA Chief Operating Officer Peter Simpson. Survey results, which reflected views of 317 respon- dents, revealed that: most first-time home buyers cur- rently rent accommodation away from parents; will be buying their first home with a Partner; would like to buy a three-bedroom townhome or detached home sized between 1,000 sq. ft. and 1,500 sg. ft.,;expect to pay between $125,000 and $199,999, will be using RRSPs for their down payment; will consider Canada Mortgage = and Housing Corporation’s 5% downpayment program; and want to be protected by a third-party new home warran- The complete survey find- ings (rounded to the nearest percentage) include: © 70% of respondents current- ly rent accommodation, while 19% live with parents; © 64% will be buying their first home with =a spouse/partner. 26% said they would be buying their first home alone; © 41% said they plan to buy within six months, while 34% indicated they would buy within one year. 14% said they plan to buy within the next two to three years; f © 40% said they plan to pur- chase a detached house, 30% a townhome, 13% a lowrise condominium — apartment, 11% a highrise condominium and 3% a duplex; © There was no clear prefer- ence for specific locations, although Vancouver, Surrey, Langley and Burnaby were mentioned most. © 6% said their maximuin price would be less than $125,000, 19% said $125,000-$149,999, 15% said $150,000-$174,999, 20% said $175,000- $199,999, 28% said $200,600-$249,999 and 11% said over $250,000. ¢ 2% said they have less than $5,000 for a down payment, 21% said $5,000-$9,999, 24% said $10,006-$19,999, 28%. said $20,000 to $49,999 and 16% said more than $50,000. © 4% said they want to pur- chase a home smaller than 800 sq. ft., 7% said 800-999 sq. ft., 13% said 1,000-1,199 sq. ft., 32% said 1,200-1,499 sq. ft., 18% said 1,500-1,799 sq. ft., 12% said 1,800-1,999 sq. ft. and 12% said more than 2,000 sq. ft.
