Q: My jacket has
brown stains.
Why?

A: Recently | received a winter
jacket with brown and ‘yellow
stains on the ‘cuffs and waistband
only. The jacket's fabric was
colorfast to drycleaning.

Alter examination, we found that
the rubber used in the elastic bands }
had begun to deteriorate When
rubber deteriorates, it releases a
gas that contaminates the adjacent
fabric. Once this gas contacts
atmospheric furnes, it forms
brown or yellow stains. The
discoloration may not be
noticeable before drycleaning. The
heat from drycleaning and
finishing can make the
deterioration more noticeable.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to
remove these stains by spotting or
bleaching.
