Inscribed into the benches in a variety of languages, including braille, will be the dedication: “We, their sisters and brothers, remember, and work for a better world. In memory-and in grief for all the women who have been mur- dered by men. For women of all countries, all classes, all ages, all colors.” Wendy Holm, director of VanCity’s corporate donations committee, noted: “It is the reac- tion against this wording that is perhaps the most significant aspect of this project ... (because) this wording is giving a name to a problem that we confront in our society.” Holm made an $11.500 dona- tion on behalf of VanCity. “It is time to give voice to this issue,” she said. ALTHOUGH THE benches in Alber's design are {2 inches thick and placed six inches off the ground, the artist did not intend for these dimensions to represent Dec. 6 Eighteen inches is a standard height for benches, As well, the artist originally planned for the circle to be 98 ft. in diameter, but when she realized that an oak tree would have to be re- moved she reworked her design. The finished size turned out to be 89 ft. She admits it was coincidental that the numbers 12, 6, 89 figured in the finished design of her Dec. 6 memori- al, adding, “it was meant to be.” Tests involving a potential treatment for } asymptomatic viral shedding in genital herpes are | presently being conducted.
