Shrove Tuesday marked

pancake supper to mark Shrove
Tuesday,

The event takes place on Tues-
day, Feb. 27 in the Parish Hall,
13th and Chesterfield, North Van-
couver. Supper begins at 6:30 p.m.
followed by customary pancake
races.

Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for
children. Tickets are available
from the church office or at the
door.

Shrove Tuesday, the day before
the start of Lent, is when tradition
tells us to eat our fill of pancakes.
The 40 days leading up to Faster
are a period of fasting and sacri-
fice. In the days before

the thrifty housewife would make
a feast of pancakes or ‘‘shriven
cakes’’ to use up the luxury items
of butter, eggs and sugar that were
forbidden during Lent.
