It’s your chance to collectively fart in the general direction of the Commonwealth Games. You'll hear some slammin’ tunes. They’re even going to be burning some flags. The fifth annual festival is set for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m, at Cates Park in North Vancouver, Admission is by donation, Various artists will join with an anticipated crowd of 7,000 te explore the theme of “colonial- ism on trial.” The eruptive musical high- -fights include: P.O.W.E.R., from Portland provides a hip-hop soundtrack for world revolution; @ Ache Brasil, Afro-Brasilian; @ Bhullar and Party, South Asian bhangra; 8 Kelly White, Coast Salish spo- ken word performance; i Insult to Injury, activist punk rock; @ Itch, hardcore; @ Big Tall Garden, North Shore folk-rock; and Mi The Vinaegrettes, Victoria- based folk-rock. Embedded within the lava flow of poetry and performance art: #2 Zolty Cracker; Archer Pechawis; @ The Slice Collective (street youth poets); & Mortal Coil (stilt dancers); @ Pyrophilliacs (choreographed flag burning); and @ Medicine Wheel (Salish First Nations youth). . Oostindie: “1 would suggest that this is the defining mornent of our generation. Lollapalooza might try to articulate itself as the defining moment, but really they’ve succumbed to the corpo- rate music industry’s desire to maximize profits from the youth culture, “What we're doing is trying to give voice to different views and educate young people on critical issues that are dear to us - envi- ronmental issues, land issues. The earth is suffering in a major way and it’s time to address those issues. “We're fusing rap music, hardcore music, folk music with the spoken word and getting people together in a safe envi- ronment and we don’t charge $38.” Music Now: Why the Common- wealth Games target?
