Local hams prepare for an emergency AN EXERCISE in emergency radio communications was receatly conducted by members of ihe North Shore Amateur Radio Club. One purpose of the club is to pro- vide such radio communications to any organization that may require it. In the event of an earthquake cr other disaster, it is vitel that reli- able channels of radio communica- tion be available to transmit im- portant messages between com- mand and evacuation centres in North and West Vancouver. On a recent Sunday morning, a dozen members of the club sta- tioned themselves at each of the designated emergency evacuation centres in West Yancouver. At an appointed time, a series of messages were transmitted between each of the stations and the quality of the transmission was recorded. Radio operators at most of the 10 sites encountered no difficulty in either receiving or transmitting messages, At a few locations it was necessary to use radio repeaters ‘which amplify anc re-transmit the signals, With the completion of this ex- ercise, all commend sad emergen- cy evacuation centres in North and West Vancouver have been check- ed for quality of radio signals. In the future, the clud is pian- ning more detailed assessment of the evacuation centres which will include test transmissions from proposed operating locations within the buildings. The North Shore Amateur Radio Club meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of every month at the Pacific Marine Training Institute on Esplanade Ave. in North Vancouver. All am- ateur radio operators, short wave listeners (SWL’s) and anyone else interested in the hobby are en- couraged to come to the meetings.
