FRUSTRATED OVER a rash of vandalism at Seymour Glenda Mentz. is enlisting the support of North Vancouver District council to help resolve what has become a chronic problem. Mentz said the damage done to the school’s playground this sum- mer is che *fworst ever’ and will cost a ‘‘fortune’’ to repair. The preschool has been ex- periencing an increase in vandalism over the year, but nothing as “disastrous”? as this summer, Mentz said. Mentz said the school may re- quest council help pay for a new chain-link fence to keep the van- dals out, but isn’t sure if council wants to put money into an old structure. “We just don’t know what to do anymore,” she said. ‘I’ve made two police reports this summer alone, and while the police are sympathetic there’s nothing they can really do because the (vandals) are juveniles.”’ On the July 1 weekend, Mentz reports that a group of teenagers kicked out boards that supported _the school’s suspension bridge, knocked down a number of fences including a railing used for wheelchair access to the school’s rear door, threw garbage on the playground and splashed graffiti over walls. In addition, rowdy teenagers, who held wild parties in the playground, some lasting until 4 a.m., flung broken glass from smashed beer bottles on the grounds leading some residents to call for the school’s closure, ac- cording to Mentz. Terry Grimm said police have acted upon a request from a Jocal resident to increase patrolling of the school. But he said the best way to catch the offenders is for neighbors to offer evidence to the police. “If we catch them or find them we'll go ahead with charges of mischief under the Criminal Code,”’ he said. Mentz meanwhile said: ‘‘] feel sorry for the neighbors, but it’s CONGRESSIONAL AMBASSADOR PRESIDENTIAL SUPREME URETHANE SUPREME (the schwol) a weli-used community building. Why should we suffer because of a small group of teenagers?’’ About 34 children attend the preschool, which is located at 2702 Mount Seymour Parkway. Various community groups also use the school. The parents own and operate the school’s big toy equipment and are responsible for maintaining the playground. Most of the vandalism occurs when school is out and the playground is unattended, but Mentz said even during the year it is hard for the parents to maintain the grounds. “Every Monday morning we have to pick broken glass and gar- bage. Obviously these kids have nothing better to do,"’ she said, adding that the youths’ parents should be held accountable. 517925 $2199 537925 S479? 569925 FREE ESTIMATES RUST REPAIRS ICBC CLAIMS 984-4171 945 W. ist ST NORTH VANCOUVER (Next to Beaver Lumber) Hours Mon.-Fri.
