Ignorance factor in boat accidents ONE THIRD of all drowning deaths in B.C. and the Yukon in- volve some kind of small craft or boat, according to Red Cross Water Safety Service chairman Steve Borthwick. “Ignorance and alcohol are ma- jor factors in most boating acci- dents,” he said in an interview prior to Red Cross Water Safety Week, June 7 to 13. In 1985, 75 per cent of the boaters who drowned in B.C. were not wearing personal flotation devices (PFDs) or lifejackets. In 40 per cent of these cases, the occupants of the craft had PFDs or lifejackets on board, but were not wearing them. In 35 per cent of these ‘cases, PFDs and life- jackets were not on board. “By law, all boats require Department of Transport-approv- ed PFDs or lifejackets,’’ Bor- thwick said. ‘‘Make sure yours fits properly and put it on before you enter a boat. These safety devices should not be used as seat cush- ions.” Standing up in a small craft can also be dangerous. “Sixty per cent of all boating accidents result from people stan- ding up in a small craft such as a canoe or rowboat,’’ Borthwick said. The Red Cross further reminds boaters that alcoho! and water can be a deadly combination. “Thirty-three per cert of all drowning victims are intoxicated at the time of death,’? Borthwick said. The Red Cross advises the public not to consume alcohol or drugs while participating in aquatic ac- tivities and also recommends that: © Boaters check daily weather forecasts and learn to recognize weather signs, such as sudden shifts in wind and fog, choppy waves and dark clouds; © Boaters take a chart and com- _ pass along and know how to use them; © Boaters leave a ‘‘float plan’’ (itinerary, including expected date of return) with a friend at home; © Boaters carry a well-equipped first aid kit, with them at all times.
