A : : : Capilano Golf Course’s Mike La J 2 TAR: ave ve; West Prairie said recently that only three : s No debvery on these ttoms days of frost this winter means : : : eee een local courses are in good shape for the coming season. “Our course this year is in the best shape it has ever been in,’’ La Prairie said. ‘‘We’re going to have a big season this year. It’s going to be busy.”’ Last season a two-month cold spell coupled with a popular Expo 86 saw numbers on local courses fall short as the expected throngs failed to materialize. This year golfers will not have visitors to keep them on the tourist beat and off the courses. Fewer visitors means more time for hitting their golf balls. Officials expect this year to be a busy golf season at the many local public and private courses. Already a popular sport that sees several hundred golfers play the 18-hole Capilano course on a busy day, the pastime is now rap- idly growing. And golfing stereotypes of older ladies and gents are changing as the sport opens up to different groups that have found the pleasures of the game. More and more teenagers and young adults are discovering the sport and many courses offer special courses, workshops and lessons to help sharpen skills. “*There’s a lot more (younger players) than before,’’ explained La Prairie. “Without the younger golfers the sport won't grow — who'll keep playing?”’ At the end of March to the beginning of April, golf courses around the Lower Mainland host opening days and special tourna- ments to kick off the season. ‘It’s just to tell everybody that we’re open and just to play a lot,” La Prairie said. ‘‘We're seeing more people this time of the month than last summer.’’: Hon on eR Live with an explorer WHEN YOUR baby begins mov- ing about, a whole new world is opened up.
