SHORE MINOR HOCKEY Players skate to victory SEVEN young minor hockey players from North and West Vancouver are wearing the smiles of champions after competing in the 1986 Mac’s Super Series tour- nament in North Delta recently. They were members of the Van- couver team which won the cham- pionship game in the Minor Ban- tam division with a convincing 6-1 victory over Minnesota Wantasa, a collection of the best high school players under the age of !6 in the state of Minnesota. Included on the Vancouver team were seven players from the North Shore Winter Club — Mark Kaufmann, Jason Jennings, John Fraser, Dean Russell, Kevin Alex- ander, John Ridd and team cap- tain Robert Tadey. Two other players from Bur- naby, Derek Lee and Brian Sakic, are former members of the NSWC. Kaufmann, who scored 12 goals in seven games, was named to the division all-star team at forward. Lee was selected an all-star i} is Je, a med pss NSS defenceman. Murphy will participate in the elite session in the evenings for bantam ‘AAA’ and Midget players, joining a staff composed mainly of former NSWC players. The hockey sessions will be handled by instructors Mark McLeary, Scott Rawson, Mare Rousseau and Chris Hawkins, with Murphy adding his support following his freshman season at Michigan State University. Murphy, Rawson and Rousseau ail have played for Penticton Knights in the B.C. Junior Hockey League, while McLeary has played for several B.C. Junior Hockey League teams, along with stints at the University of B.C. and with Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League. The ringette sessions will be under the guidance of Keith Corney, past president of the B.C. Ringette Association. Murphy, Rawson and Rousseau all were members of the 1984 NSWC Midget hockey team, which won the provincial championship that year.
