Parton resigns over
Fantasy ‘cardens issue

BURNABY-EDMONDS Social Credit candidate and North Van-
couver resident Nicole Parton has quit her political position over
the Fantasy Gardens issue.

Attributing her move to a matter of ethics, Parton said Tuesday
she is quitting hecause Premier Bill Vander Zalm did not step
aside while his rote in the real estate deal is being investigated for
a possible conflict of interest.

An emotional Parton fought back the tears as she made her
announcement: ‘I cannot in good conscience serve a leader who
does not recognize the fundamental necessity to remove himself
from office while on investigation into his conduct is ongoing."’

In a letter to Vander Zalm, Parton wrote, ‘“‘With the greatest
respect to you and the esteemed office you hold, our party cannot
serve with honor while our leader's behavior is under scrutiny.’

Partow’s announcement caught her supporters by surprise.

Parton, a former Vancouver Sun columnist, said she has no
immediate plans to resume her job as a journalist.

“But if | may serve this province that I love and the people that
T love, in another capacity, then I would be only too willing to
accept that invitation,’’ she said.

Man sentenced for
dangerous driving

A 21-YEAR-OLD man was sentenced Jan. 31 in West Vancouver
provincial court to 21 days in jail for several driving-related

charges.
Grant Wilson Hagan, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to

dangerous driving, driving while impaired and driving while dis-
quatified.
Hagan was apprehended after a Jan. 13 incident on 15th Street

in West Vancouver.
