AO - Friday, November 16, 1984 - North Shore News PS editorial ee News Viewpoint Turnout ts vital for wise choices omorrow is V (for VOTE)-Day in the two North Shore civic elections. As we noted Wednesday, North Van District is in a relatively happy situation, with a field of reputable candidates offering the voters clean choices. The same is true of the West Van School Board election. Incumbents Fran McDowell and Michael Smith are seeking re-election on their known records, with the third seat up for grabs by three challengers---all of good standing with sound background qualifica- tions. Lawyer Hugh Stark leans towards Smith's fairly hard line on the teacher evaluation issue. Rev. Bill Perry (a former Chilliwack alderman) and well known com- munity leader Pat Boname would likely tend towards a more pragmatic approach to Board-teacher relations. If records of service over the past two years are a yardstick in the West Van alder- manic race, we suggest both incumbents, Aldermen Brokenshire and Griffiths, are well worthy of re-election. Each of the three challengers for council's vacant third seat--- Bert Fleming, Bill Howard and Mark Sager- --commands personal respect. Sager, however, has two ‘‘plus’’ marks that may appeal to many voters: his successful record as former School Board chairman and the fresh younger outlook he would bring to an older council. The West Van mayoralty alternatives are clear-cut. On the one hand, the tradition of stable, cooperative and accessible civic leadership established by former mayors Art Langley and Peter Jones, and continued with steady community progress over the past six years by Mayor Derrick Humphreys. On the other hand, whatever Tom Retd’s positive qualities, the more confrontational hand- ling of municipal issues suggested by his campaign and record. Voters will choose between the (wo on the basis of which approach they see as the healthier, more constructive and more ap- propriate for present-day West Van. The format of this sull popular and inspiring poem is such that it has provided several generations of would-be wits with a vehicle for prostittuting a noble theme and displaying a variety Of shallow minds. In this instance, some fellow too faint-hearted to use his name has, in his kKipl- ing-style rhyme, blamed the present candidates for Mayor and Aldermen. ot West Vancouver for allow. ing developers to ‘‘destroy the town you know’ with “Thi-rise towers and monstrous blocks’ ’, and mentions ‘for preed and profit’. In tact, the Mayor has done all that he possibly could to prevent further shorefront development, permitted by bylaws long be- fore his time and that of the present aldermen. Along with other such distortions, the writer ntocks the Mayor on his stand for stability, integrity and har- mony, which he lhkens to “tthe ture of the vile strumpet.’’ This |] find a bit vicious, even for political poetic license Kipling himself, however, has the appropriate verse to deseribe the miserable screed. For---as though ad- dressing Mayor Humphreys, Aldermen Brokenshire and Ginffiths---he said: “If wou can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted bs knaves to make a trap tor fools Such is their response to the unknown knave David L..
