A HUDAC economic research newsletter said there were 125,860 housing starts in Canada in 1982 and predicted the number would increase to 160,000 this year. JOHN'S (UPC) - The Canadian oil industry will in- creasingly be forced to rely on Atlantic offshore oil pro- duction as western reserves diminish, the chairman of the Canadian Petroleum Association says. Edward Best told a news conference that crude oil production has dwindled to half the peak levels of 1969 and Alberta reserves “are running out.” “The immediate hopes of the petroleum industry are pinned on production from Hibernia (off Newfoundland) with its reserve potential of nearly two billion barrels of oil,” Best said. He said falling world oil prices would not prevent the oil industry from exploiting the Atlantic's vast energy reserves and predicted the industry would invest about $1 billion in the area in 1983. Best questioned = the federal government's goal of western | be built in 1983, but that figure has been adjusted up- wards by 10,000. “Consumer confidence has increased more than ex- pected owing to the decrease in the inflation rate and a higher level of employment combined .with lower in- terest rates,” the report said. John Rae, chairman of HUDAC's economic research committee, said by that 1984 housing _ starts would probably increase by 10 per cent over present levels. “But housing prices will still not rise, not like they did aiting for the new boom in the 1970s,” he said. About 70 per cent of the new homes that would be constructed in 1983 were ex- pected to be single family dwellings with the remaining 30 per cent multi-family units. The report forecast there would be an increase in housing starts in all pro- vinces but Alberta, where the 1982 level of 26,789 was expected to drop to 18,000 this year. . About 56,500 new homes were expected to be built in Ontario this year - up from 38,508 in 1982.
