A MYSTERY in which a
man leaped from a vehicle
and fled from West Van-
couver police, disappearing
in bush to the sound of gun-
shot around midnight Mon-
day was cleared up about
eight hours later when he
was found hidden in a boat
parked nearby.

The events began when a
police officer went to check
a 1979 Ford Bronco at the
top of Westhill Drive, which
had both doors open.

A man jumped from the
passenger door and ran into
a nearby bush area, and a
shot was then heard.

Police searched the area,
aided by a dog, but failed to
turn up any trace of the man.
A search of the Bronco
revealed various property,
including some .32 calibre
ammunition.

Then around 8 a.m. a resi-
dent of Westhill Drive called
police to say he had checked

his boat in the driveway and
there was a covered body in
it, but he did not know if it
was dead or alive.

Police found the “body”
which was very much alive
and which matched the
description of the man who
had earlier fled into the
bush.

Investigation traced much
of the property back to a
break-in which had occured
in the 6200 block St.
George’s Cresent a few days
earlier. The Bronco had also
been stolen from that ad-

dress, as weil as credit cards
and a Walther PPK 7.65mm
automatic handgun.

Grant Gordon Fenwick,
aged 18, of 3324 Westmount
Road, West Van, appeared
in provincial court in con-
nection with the incident.

He is charged with break
and entry with intent, three
counts of theft of credit
cards, three counts of
possession of stolen credit
cards, two counts of theft
over $200, two of possessing
stolen property, one count of
Possessing a _ restricted
weapon and one of using a
firearm while fleeing from
police.
