DIANA is an at-
+traetive, self-assured t7
year old who spends
her Saturday mornings
at a local recreation
centre. But Diana is not
there with her own
friends, she is helping a
trained social worker
with a group) of
children aged 6 to 12, a
number of whom come

from singie-famity
homes.

Diana is one of a new
breed of volunteer which has
evolved in the past few
years. These are youth
volunteers, young people

between the ages of 16 and
25, and they are found in

every area of the com.
munity. With fewer jobs
available and = experience

being an important factor in
the search for a yob, many
young people have turned to
volunteer work.

They know that an em
ployer may well look more
favourably at an apphceant
who has had the imative to
gain some work experience
as a volunteer. Some have
found thetr way into” the
career they wanted as a
result, others have gained

way and are a_ valuable
resource in the community.
Diana is very conscious of
the economic and social
problems within our society
and as a result decided some
lime ago that she wanted to
be a social worker with
juveniles. With this goal in
view, she has had vaned
experience over the past
year, observing the services
available at local agencies,
each meeting specific needs
within the community.
Diana's present volunteer
work on the weekend in-
volves her in an orgamzed
programme of crafts and
games with the children,
sometimes in the recreation
centre or outside, weather
permitting. The children
learn new activities and
make frends and in general
have a lot ef fun. They also
learn the wumportance 9 of
cooperation Through active
participation, Diana ts

learning how this type of
programme benefits the
children.

Diana’s future plans are to
find a paid summer job
working with children and
eventually take her Bachelor
in Social Work. She is a
determined young woman
who knows where she is
going and there is hittle
doubt that she will achieve
her goal.
