A DISPUTE which erupted
at Burrard Yarrows in North
Vancouver last week over
which umion_ should be
working on a ship built there
has been put on the back
burner, pending arbitration.

Work stopped for the day
on Tuesday last week when
joiners who are members of
the Marine and Shipbuilders
Local 506 walked out and set
up a picket line.

The joiners’ were
protesting a decision to give
work building a bulkhead on
the first of three Dome
petroleum icebreakers being
built there to sheet metal
workers.

Such work is usually
carned out by joiners but the
decision was made since the
bulkheads are being built of
sheet metal instead of wood.

Work ceased for two shifts
but resumed Wednesday
after a cease and desist order
was issued by the _ labor
relations board in a ruling
which declared to work
stoppage was illegal.

Burrard's vice-president of
finance and administration
David Alsop descnbed the
work stoppage aS a major
inconvenience and said it
would be costly.

The work dispute will be
dealt with by arbitration.
