Dear Editor:

On the 5th of August (the
very eve of the 37th an-
‘niversary of the destruction
of Hiroshima) the United
States: “tested” a’ nuclear
-weapon...for about the 700th
‘time. The only: “benefit”
seems to be that it shook up
a few gambling establish-
ments in Law Vegas, over
100 kilometres away...for
whatever that may be worth.

U.S. Energy Secretary
James Edwards mumbled
‘something’ about how
“maintaining freedom is
expensive”. The media
dutifully reported this purple
passage without asking what
possible connection there
might be between “main-
taining freedom” and ex-
ploding ‘an atomic bomb in
the Nevada desert.

After more than 1,200
nuclear bombs have been
exploded on the planet, it is
downright depressing that
not a single journalist has
found the wit to ask what it’s
all about.

For 35 years, these
horrific body blows to
mother earth have been
called “tests”. A_ test is
described as a “critical
examination or trial of a
thing’s -qualities”. Yet after
more than S years of full-

time work on disarmament, I
haven't the foggiest notion
what they could be possibly
be testing for...what it could
possibly be that they don’t
already know.

I dare to suggest that the
entire media has been duped
by jargon. Both superpowers
know everything they could
possibly know about nuclear
bombs. :

In my view, these nuclear
weapons tests, at $8 or $10
million a crack, are not tests
at all! Perhaps it’s just a
bunch of” over-aged
delinquents playing with the
fate of the earth. Worse yet,
it may be that they‘re just
practicing for the “real
thing”.

It’s time journalists asked
“why”, like they were taught
to do in their first journalism
school (remember the “5
W’s”?). And in the absence
of any sensible explanation,
its time the media stopped
using the word “test” and
starting condemning the
super-brats for their
outrageous and  con-
temptible disregard for the
welfare of the only world
we've got.
