OFF-SEASON CHARTERS SAVE MONEY Sailing through the winter IF SUMMER SET SAIL and you didn’t, take heart, there’s still time to feel the wind and spray on your face. Charters, rentals and some lessons are available year round and, if you take advantage of the off-season, you may even save money. Sea Wing Sailing on Granville Island, for exam- ple, offers a 20 per cent dis- count on rentals and charters for the months October through April. There’s also a wide variety of boats to choose from. ‘““We’ve got the biggest fleet in Canada right now,”’ says Sea Wing President, Brian Morse, of the approx- imaiely 45 vessels in his charge. There are 23 different types of boats listed for hire and larger ones are available upon request. You can rent a 20 foot Goman for an even- ing or half-day for less than $40, at regular rates, but dis- count another 20 per cent for this off-peak period. Once you've considered your rental fee, most of your travel expenses are taken care of which makes hiring a boat a good alternative vacation idea. “It’s really become the thing to do these days,’’ Morse says, noting that on some occasions customers have come back from their holiday with a sizeable salmon catch to their credit. ‘“*That’s pretty rare,’’ he adds, but one might be able to at least catch enough to cover a few meals aboard. Morse says that if fishing isn’t your idea of a vacation, there are any number of islands in the permitted sail- ing area, (anywhere inside Vancouver Island), where one can weigh anchor and go ashore for a meal or just a visit. ‘‘This is one of the best cruising areas in the world,”’ he says, indicating that a per- son can sail the Strait in four hours in fair weather. There are various routes or destina- tions to choase from when considering a holiday, from the Gulf or San Juan Islands to Howe Sound. SeaWing can also accom- modate if you want to learn to sail, improve or acquire knowledge in coastal or celestial navigation, learn to race or even sail to Hawaii. A basic coastal cruising course will run you $229 per person and, upon successful comple- tion, a CYA certification is awarded. Morse says that probably 50 per cent of his business comes out of basic sailing lessons. Until November there is the option of combining a holiday with lessons on one of Sea Wing’s Cruise and Learn Vacation Programs. Your food, ‘‘grog’’? and CYA cer- tification is inchided in the course that sails you through the Gulf Islands. ra tun time adults, please contact the centre at 926-4375.
