OLIVE Marie Loucks,
wife of long-time North
Vancouver mayor Jack
Loucks, passed away
Nov. 22 in Evergreen
House *n North

Vancouver at the age of
79.

Olive was a quiet, gente
woman. “People who knew her
will say she always had a sparkle
in her .” said her daughter,
Marv Ferraby. .

Born in Big Valley, Alberta,
Olive moved to Vancouver
when she was just.a child. She
graduated from King Edward
High school and then went on

University of Toronto. Olive

met Jack in Toronto. They

ried for 54 years. They had

Mary and Allan and six grand-

Not a person that liked
being the centre of attention,

Olive was reluctant when her
husband decided to run for
office. However, Mary. said
After about two years ¢ ng
in the public eve, Olive came
to enjoy it. “She said te me,
‘This isn’t so bad. Look at all
the wondertul peopic Ive
moet,” Mary said.

Mary described her mom
as being like a barbecue
bisque. “When a match is lit, it
catches everyone's attention
for a short time and leaves
nothing,” Mary said. “But a

bisque isn’t the centre of

attention but radiates warmth
and you feel drawn to it.
When the ba is over,
the ashes remain with memo-
ties. [v's comforting.”

Asa family, the Loucks did
a lot of traveling. They took
several trips across Canada
pulling a wrailer. “TE always
admired mom for doing her
share of the driving,” Mary
said. “I wouldn’t drive a big
trailer like that.” ;

Olive also went on several
trips with her husband to
Britain, Japan, Hong Kong
