4 - North Shore News — Wednesday, January 12, 2000 WY police do ICE, a West Vancouver Police dog, was executed Jan. 6 because he bit a 2% year-old boy on Thanksgiving Day in North Vancouver. The German shepherd and his handler were called to assis) North Vancouver RCMP in catching 2 break and enter sus- pect in Upper Lonsdale on Oct. 11. The dog was on a six-metre leash and attacked the child on the northwest corner of Lonsdale and Queens. Sgt. Jim Almas said the difficule deci- sion to put the dog down was “made after an exhaustive investigsion.” He said medical and operational tests were conducted on Ice and “the facts thor- oughly reviewed.” Almas said the handler, whom he declined to identify, was not being disci- plined. “We found we were put in a moral posi- doen to protect the public and make sure g dispatched this kind of incident doesn’t happen again,” he said. Almas said the West Vancouver Police were alarmed and concerned by the horrif ic experience of the child's fanuly. Ice was born June 10, 1995 and trained during January 1999 by the Vancouver City Police, Almas said. — Bob Mackin Elderly driver kills woman, injures son A 64-year-old North Vancouver woman was killed on Jan. 6 after being struck by a car in front of her home in the 500-block of East 29th Street. Seong So Kim was crossing the street with her husband and 41-year-old blind son when she was struck by a car driven by an 85-year-old North Vancouver woman, Kim's son was also struck by the vehicle. Kim’s husband was not injured. To press time, Kim's son was in Lions Gate Hospital (GH) in stable condi- ton. He is expected to survive. His name and the name of the motorist were not released by police. According to the North Vancouver RCMP, the Kims had earlier gone to LGH because one of the family mem- bers had pneumonia. They were turned away from the hospital because there were no beds available. The fatal acct- dent occurred after the Kims returned home and were dropped off by a taxi. They were crossing the street to their home at 6 p.m. in the rain. Seong So Kim died at LGH 5 early the next morning. Police say the girl’s mother saw the teen jump. Police said the girl had a disagreement with her parents before the incident. Alcohol was a factor. News sources indicate that the teenager was at a party where other teenagers were drinking.
