North Vancouver Lori Hindley, who volun- teers her time at the North Vancouver SPCA Shelter, was recently honoured with one of the society’s 1999 Humanitarian of the Year award, Each of the Vancouver Regional Branch’s shelters, ani- mal hospital, and fundraising and administration department nominated a volunteer who exhibited exemplary work on behalf of the animals cared for by the branch. The 12 volun- teers honoured ranged from foster care coordinators to ani- mal adoption counsellors to special event coordinators. During the peal — consid- ered a major milestone in a change ringer’s career — cach bellringer will pull on their rope 5,040 times in the three- hour period of continuous ringing. It’s a test of concentra- tion and endurance for the bell- ringers, and this will be the third consecutive year that a peal will be attempted on these bells for Canada Day. If you miss it, a visiting band of bell- ringers will again attempt to ring a peal from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 8. Deep Cove Donna Serviss, the presi- dent of the Deep Cove and Area Heritage Association recently announced the appointment of Jacqueline Gore as the new coordinator of the association. Gore has lived on the North Shore for 20 years and and has a long and well-documented interest in history and archacology.
