wastikas and double standards WHIT sells? Sex, swastikas and crime. That explains in part why “holocaustomania” ts never out of the news. One might think the war ended last week. The holocaust has become an industry. Just consider the pressure on Switzerland. It is claimed that the alleged Nazi gold in Switzerland belongs to holo- caust survivors. But no one has proved anything. And a Jewish “investigator” was on the air recently stating, “the war is not yet over.” So it seems. Over half'a century since the last shot was Gred the hunt for Nazi war criminals — real, imagined, dead or dying, has reached frantic proportions. It is a tribute to the power of groups like the Canadian Jewish Congress (CJC) and the World Jewish Congress. One is not supposed to say things like that and the main- stream media never do. But not saying it does not make it not true. Recently, the TV pro: 60 Minutes accused this oun try of harboring war criminals. We are “a Paraguay of the North.” The item was done by Mike Wallace who, being Jewish himself, might not be entirely unprejudiced. And all the usual faces appeared, including the CJC’s Irving Abella and the ubiquitous Bernie Farber. The next night the CBC's National took up the story and most of the same faces appeared again. You have to hand it to those groups. They press a burton and the film starts playing. Thar’s how crimes commit- ted outside of Canada by peo- ple who were not Canadians became a Canadian affair. And why Ottawa set up the Deschenes Royal Commission of inquiry on war criminals in 1986. Tt came up with the recom- mendation that 200 suspects should be investigated. Millions of dollars and 11 years later only one war crimi- nal has been extradited — Jacob Luitjens -— and that was because the Dutch govern- ment was after him for offences against his own peo- ple. Why only one? Fifty years after the war is a mass of con- fused memories and debatable storics. Several high profile “war criminals” have been shown to be innocent, the classic case being that of John Demjanjuk, accused of being “Ivan the Terrible” of Treblinka. After he had spent years in jail in Israel three Israchi judges acquitted him. Unanimously. The pressure groups keep pressing. So Ortawa agreed to do an end run around the failed war crimes prosecutions by making those who may have lied about their military background subject to depor- tation. Those cases are proving, difficult, too. Only a few weeks ago, 90-year-ald Antanas Kenstavicius of Hope, a former Lithuanian, had the bad taste to chear his accusers by dying the very day he was to be heard. 60 Minutes ran a tape made by a private eye, Steve Rambam, who claimed to have tricked Kenstavicius and others into making confes- sions. Outraged over StatsCan scam Dear Editor: Bravo, Mr. Collins. (StatsCan’s snooping storm- troopers, Feb. 19 News). It’s important that this littlc- known Survey of Family Expenditures and the man- date granted StatsCan be exposed to the full glare of public scrutiny. The knock on our door Jan. 23 was a rude awakening to the sweeping powers granted. this agency. That day we were informed the laws of this country required us to under- go a face-to-face interview in our home, revealing every detail of our financial life in 1996 — a full accounting of every dollar earned, inherited, gifted, won, or dug up in the back yard; a complete accounting of every loan, mortgage, credit card bal- ance; the net change in cash held in the bank; RRSP hold- ings. Government bonds, pri- vate stocks and mutual funds, etc., etc. We were to provide minute details of every dollar spent that year, listed sepa- rately for each family member. DRAPERIES & BLINDS BY S. Whether they included the alleged Kenstavicius statement is not clear. But the police were not impressed. Set. Pierre Bisson has been quoted in the Western Jewish Bullerin as saying: “There was no admission from the inter- viewcees, contrary to what Mr. Rambam said.” It was also stated that Rambam had “exaggerated the so-called confessions he had obtained.” Were atrocities committed? Yes. Especially on the Eastern Front. And Jews were mur- dered because they were Jews. It’s worth beanng in mind, though, that in spite of Atlantic Charters and other soothing declarations, large numbers of Germans were killed for being Germans when the Russians arrived. And mil- lions were expelled from their ancient lands. Rape and rob- bery were routine. Similar atrocities took place when the Czechs took back the Sudentenland. The Czech president has apologized for them. This has been a century of holocausts. But you could be forgiven for thinking there had been only one. Meanwhile, war crimes have been commit- ted by those who denounce them most. Ask the Palestinians about Israeli war crimes. Ask the Lebanese. Consider, too, the response of the Israeli govern- ment to last year’s news that its troops had massacred Egyptian prisoners in the wars ofl 956 and 1967. The prime minister of the time, Yitzhak Rabin, said nothing could be done about it now. It was all too long ago. I agree.
