Explorers, As they say in Jerry
Garcia land: What a long,
strange dining trip it’s been.

The sturdy wood beam
walls of the original Harvest
House are now festooned in
things Thai as the local god-
father of that country’s cui-
sine has rolled into North
Vancouver in a big way.

On Oct. 26, Patrick Chen
hosted a gala launch of his
sixth Thai House. This one
in the 7,000 sq. ft. locale
that most North Shore resi-
dents know as the Harvest
House building.

The Harvest was launched
in the mid-’70s at the height

Another place of heavy wood
walls, dark interiors and thick
cuts of red meat. With its
added appendage of live
music and spirited cocktail
lounge, it enjoyed a good
carnivore’s run, ;

Two decades later it is a
house of an entirely different
culture,

The dapper Mr. Chen has
added ‘Thai brass, stone and
glass to the building’s heavy
wood interior and the floral
and fiery flavors of Southeast
Asia to the original’s heavy
meat and potatoes menu.

A whole new house. And
this one might be around for
awhile.

Chen, a former hotelier in
Bangkok, launched his first
Thai House 10 years ago on
Robson Street. Since then he
has added locations in
Kitsilano, Richmond,
Metrotown and English Bay.

And now across the great
Burrard divide to the North
Shore to do battle with the
Thai Palace, which ts only a
short seaward walk away at
the entrance to the North
Vancouver SeaBus station,
and Krua Thai, which is a
more challenging uphill
climb to the 1400-block of
Lonsdale.

Still, Mr. Chen, who
would have the restaurant
critic with the hot-sauce-
spattered tie believe he is a
man of simple philosophies
and humble talents, betrays a
serene confidence that his

House will prevail.

After all, were not the
owners of the other two
North Shore Thai food
restaurants once members of
Chen’s That House staff?

Indeed. .

This then is no restaurant :
neophyte eager to toss good
money after bad in a big
location that has made short
work of many previous ten-
ants,

The Thai House has won
critical acclaim in all its other
locations. Mr, Chen is intent
on winning that same
acclaim on this side of the
inlet. ;
Harvest House was not
his first choice; however.”
