NORTH Shore firefighters have a
few words to say about Halloween
fireworks.

“Family fireworks accidents are almost
always the result of improper handling, or bla-
tant disregard of common-sense safety rules,”
said the West Vancouver Fire Department's
Gerry Harrington.

For people who have no desire to handle
the fireworks themselves, North Vancouver
District firefighters invite one and all to fire-

paid off for B.C.
motorists on the
treacherous Sea-to-Sky
highway, said ICBC.

Increased police enforce-
ment and a public awareness
campaign helped saved lives
and cut claims costs by
$610,000, in the 1995-96
winter season.

The Sea-to-Sky - Project
included 80 extra hours of
police enforcement per week
from November 1995 co
March 1996. in an area
stretching from Lions Bay to
Pemberton.

During this period, there
were 259 crashes compared
with the 289 in the 1994-95

_ Winter season and 475 in the
winter of 1993-94,

Police now report a 5.5%
reduction in speed and a. 21%
drop in erratic driving com-
plaints from the public.

“It's all about perceived
risk of apprehension,” said
Cpl. Joe Schofield of the
Squamish Highway Patrol.

“Tf drivers think they may
be caught speeding, our cam-
paign indicates they will slow
down,” he said,

ICBC invested $89,000 to
cover police enforcement
costs, clerical assistance and

. advertising.

The corporation’s partners
in the project include the
Squamish Highway Patrol,
RCMP “E” Division and the
Police Services Branch of the
Attorney General’s Ministry.

North Vancouver City requires a person to
obtain a permit in order to purchase and dis-
charge fireworks in the city. Purchasers oust
be at least 18 years old.

Fireworks must not be discharged on pub-
lic property and firecrackers are banned in
Canada.

Harrington also offers a few fireworks tips:
@ one adult should be in charge of the dis-
play;

BQ children should noc participate in the firing
of fireworks;

@ buckets, boxes or wheelbarrows filled with
earth or sand make a good firing base;
