Capilano “College goalie to the game of soccer. : By Andrew McCredie Sports Reporter “It began when I was five,” the first-year business administration student says of her early begin- nings. “I wasn’t supposed to play — my dad didn’t want me to — but he went away and my inom signed me up.” oo Turns out mother knew best. In just her first season of college play, the 18-year-old leads the pack of British Columbia college net- minders with three shutouts in four games. Her team, the Lady Blues, ° lead the league with an undefeated 5-0-1 record. Their final. regular season game is tomorrow at noon against BCIT in Vancouver. As of today, Capilano is ranked second in the country behind Alberta’s Mount Royal Cougars. D’Andrea grew up in Burnaby, developing her netminding skills via the solid Cliff Avenue soccer club program and three years with the Burnaby Selects. In addition to playing for the Lady Blues this sea- _ son, she has signed on with the ~ Burnaby Rangers women’s team. Despite the initial behind-dad’s- . back introduction: to — soccer, D’Andrea’s father has become, along with her brother, one of her strongest supporters. Asked if they give her netminding advice, she laughs: “Ooh, lots.. They watch most of my practices and tell me what I’m doing wrong.” She’s also learned a lot about life between-the-pipes — from Capilano goalie coach, and former SFU keeper, Cathy Bailey. “It's the first year I’ve ever had a goalie coach and I've learned.a lot from Cathy,” says D’ Andrea, adding that the arrival of veteran coach Doug Abercrombie and Bailey last spring sparked her com- mittment to the North Van college. “I knew some of the players and both coaches, so I thought it would be fun to play here.” Fun it may be, but coach Abercrombie says D’ Andrea’s suc- cess has come mostly from hard work: “She’s got a great working | . . . ethic and works really hard in prace The renovation of White Spot is complete.
