West Van actor not just another wi Jackson Davies enjoys success in Arts Club play Evelyn Jacob SPOTLIGHT FEATURE FTER A decade promot- ing Carter Cars and 16 years as the Beachcombers’ goofy cop Constable J. Constable, Jackson Davies’ face may well have clocked more air time than any other Vancouver actor. But while you might expect him to credit a benevolent produc- er or a performance of a lifetirne for his big break, Davies has a more mundane fairy godmother. “ owe it all to a root beer popsicle,” admits the eminently likable West Vancouver actor, “They (Beachcombers producers) needed me to drive a police car away on a shoot and ! decided to eat a root beer popsicle. They found it amus- ing,” says Davies. “It was a role with no lines, but that 25-cent popsicle got me back in.” ‘ That syrupy frozen stick of pop got him back in for another 16 years to be exact. and helped . launch a cereer that has become the envy of many a Canadian actor. Davies has appeared in dozens of TV shows, made-for-TV movies and feature films, includ- ing the latest Bond thriller, The Man Who Wouldn’t Die. The Wild Guys, in which Davies plays a guileless IGA pro- duce manager who gets lured away on a guys’ sensitivity week- end, reopened last month at the Arts Club Mainstage Theatre after selling out nightly for more than four months last year. Davies has appeared in over 150 stage shows, but this has been his longest the- atre run. He’s having a good time. “Sometimes the theatre can be spellbinding; at times it can become heavy and thought pro- voking. In the case of The Wild Guys it is particularly meaningful because Davies was one of the main reasons the show was produced in the first place. It was Davies who convinced creators Andrew Wreggitt and Rebecca Shaw to rework their story into a two-act play, and it was Davies who happily present- ed the work to Arts Club artistic director Bill Millerd.
