12 - Sunday, August 14, 1994 - North Shore News day walk-out that left some residents without garbage col- lection that week. While our survey reveals that more than 90% of North Shore residents consider garbage collection to be an essential service, it depends on one’s definition of “essential.” It is terribly inconvenient when sanitation work- ers withhold their services: however, it does not pose the same threat as, say, police officers or fire fighters withhold- ing their services. Garbage collection is not essential to life and liberty — but it is essential to living in a clean, beautiful city that we can be proud of. FEW PEOPLE who were living here in the early “80s will forget the time that the gaz cage collectors went on strike. Some of the images that spring to mind include trash cans overflowing onto sidewalks, bags of garbage tossed at the side of the road, and parks littered with household waste. Could this happen again? It almost did. Victoria civic work- ers went back to work last Wednesday after staging a week- Jong strike that threatened the city’s image just days before the start of the Commonwealth Games, And two weeks ago North Vancouver District sanitation workers staged a one- ibys INQUIRING REPORTER Lae) Glover North Vancouver I would say so. It's become an essential service in the modern day. We have all this throw-away stuff so we have to have garbage col- lection. But 1 do think peo- ple should be made respon- sible for the amount of garbage they put out. Reg Slater West Vancouver Yes. What are we going to do with it if nobody picks it up? What a mess. U'd defi- nitely say it’s essential for health reasons. You can't ignore garbage. Sharon Deringer North Vancouver Yes, because of the nature of garbage you have to have it taken away on a regular basis — particularly at this time of the year, Most peo- ple do not have a good place tou keep garbage and with our raccoon problem it would be a real mess. Michael Anderson West Vancouver Yes, because it’s just going to pile up otherwise isn't it? Steven Jacobs North Vancouver 1 would think so because if it wasn't collected it would be pretty stenchy around the North Shore. We'd have a big rat problem — before you knew it they’d be all - over the place. And we’d also get a lot mere rac- coons, coyotes and bears.
