explore. And in Canada we have an unparal-
leled boating resource in our myriad Jakes,
streams, and sea coasts. Nature also presents many chal-
lenges to boaters, what with changing weather, waves
and currents, plus the ever present need to navigate
around the hard spots and other hoats.
With all these challenges, smart boaters need to keep all
their wits about them. And the biggest enemy to smart
boating ~ drinking and boating - is one the boater can con-
trol, says the Canadian Safe Boating Council. Research in
Canada has shown that at least 40%, and perhaps more, of
all boating deaths are related to alcohol consumption.
Alcohol affects your sense of balance and reaction time.
On the patio, or in a restaurant this may not cause much
harm but on the water it can spell disaster. Coast Guard
studies detail the effect of the sun, wind and waves on a
sober boater, reaction times increase, and other senses are
dulled. Drinking alcohol while boating more than doubles
these effects. Your risk of falling overboard
increases dramatically and your judge-
ment in critical situations becomes
impaired.
Drinking on a boat is twice as dan-
gerous as drinking on shore!

DISTRESS SIGNALS

A skipper may require assistance or see someone else in need of help. There are standard
marine distress signals of various types. (see Canadian Coast Guard Safe Boating Guide).
BY DAY:
1. Smoke or flares - orange in colour.
2. ‘Noise; fog horn, bell, whistle, loud hailer, voice, or gun.
3. Waving arms slowly from the legs to shoulder‘height.
4. Dispiaying the “Distress Cloth”.
5. Flying code flags N over C.
6. Racliotelephone. identify the vessel and give exact position.
BY NIGHT:
1. Flares or rockets.
2. Flashlight or searchlight.
3. Noise,
4, Radiotelephone.
If. equipped with radiotelephone, you
should monitor VHF Channel 16
(156.8Mhz) or 2182Khz on the
HF marine band; or the calling
or emergency channel of the
radio you are using. With
General Radice Service (Citizens
Band), Channel 9 has been set
aside for distress only.
When calling for assistance on the
radioteléphone, it must be clearly understood
that the call signal MAYDAY is reserved for dire
emergencies “involving risk to life’. The use of this cal
will precipitate a major search and rescue effort that may
involve both ships and aircraft at great expense.

you should know that impaired boating is just as serious an
offence as impaired driving. A first offence will hand you a
$300 fine. The second time, you go to jail fer a minimum
of #4 days. Maximum penalties for impaired boating
include 14 YEARS in jail and a lifetime ban on boating.

So leave the heer on shore when you go fishing, save
the champagne for the post race party, change your “sun
over the yardarm” into a “sundowner”.
