BUSINESS BRIEFS CA OF THE YEAR NORTH VANCOUVER resident Douglas Rowa has been named the recipient of the 1993 Chartered Accountant of the Year award, Established in 1992 by the In- stitute of Chartered Accountants of B.C., the award recognizes chartered accountants who make an outstanding contribution to the betterment of their community. For the past 22 years Rowa has been a volunteer with the Boys’ and Girls’ Club of Greater ‘Vancouver. Currently a director of the club, he served as its presi- dent, vice-president and treasurer for the last 10 years and has focused his efforts on fundraising. One of Rowa’s major ac- complishments was to bring the first. legal hockey pool to B.C., which now nets the club- about $100,000 a year. An admitted ‘hockey nut” and an ardent Vancouver Canucks . fan, Rowa received his CA desig- ‘nation in 197! and became. a partner of the firm Cook, Burt and Co., which later became part of Ernst and Ernst. He left the firm to briefly pur- sue a career as a hockey players’ agent and returned to the industry . by establishing his own practice. In: 1981 he purchased Hiway _ Refrigeration Ltd., a transport re- frigeration business which he still owns.
